It’s Christmas time. Kara Gentry’s wealthy grandfather, Bob Gentry, who she’s never met due to his estrangement from her father – his son, Jeff Gentry – has telephoned for the first time in years asking Kara to spend Christmas with him and her grandmother, Elsa Gentry. Jessie Wilkins, who has been living with her Aunt Jenny following the death of her mother earlier in the year – her father never having been in the picture for a reason she doesn’t know – has just been contacted by her paternal widowed grandmother, Judy Wilkins, who she’s never met, to spend Christmas with her. Kara and Jessie, both fifteen years old, meet on the same Burlington, Vermont to Stillwater, Oklahoma flight, and, becoming fast friends, learn of the other’s Christmas plans which they are both dreading.
