Winner of Best Picture and Best Actresses (tie) for Anita Linda and Rustica Carpio at the just-concluded Tehran International Film Festival and Winner of Best Film at Dubai International Filmfest and at the Rome Asian Filmfest. This is a very realistic look at the lives of those who barely get by, and insight into the Filipino culture.
Directed by Brilliante Mendoza, Anita and Rustica play grandmothers, the former as that of a murder victim and the latter as that of the suspect. Two elderly women bear the consequences of a crime involving their respective grandsons. One is the victim, the other is the suspect. Both weak and poor, they laboriously solicit money in the midst of a storm, one for the victim’s burial, the other for the suspect’s bail bond.
