It’s 1975 and the Great Cultural Revolution is in its final throes. Xiu Xiu, the daughter of a tailor, is “sent down” to the countryside to serve a movement that has long since lost its purpose. She is among the last of seven and a half million “Intellectual Youth” to be exiled from family, classmates, and everything that is familiar. Lao Jin, Xiu Xiu’s “instructor”, is a simple Tibetan herder, closer to the horses he keeps than either Chinese or Tibetan society – two worlds from which he is equally outcast…
Together Xiu Xiu and Lao Jin share a single, dilapidated army tent and a nomadic existence governed only by the seasons and the flow of rivers and streams. Xiu Xiu, indifferent to Lao Jin and his impoverished lifestyle, is alone in an alien land longing for a youth cut short. Dreaming of home, Xiu Xiu seeks her way back through the promised favors of peddlers, soldiers, and bureaucrats who periodically visit the tent on the grasslands. She trades her sexuality in a desperate search for the necessary connections to return home. In a moral compromise that only deepens her exile from her youth, Xiu Xiu’s name becomes synonymous with sexual pleasure.
